Training: Safety Education Course Listing

Introduction

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety offers training courses on a variety of safety topics. This describes courses currently being offered.

Many OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations have training requirements.

• The Hazard Communication Standard mandates that employees who may be exposed to chemicals or chemical products as part of their work receive training on the safe handling of chemicals. Therefore, workers in the trade shops and machine shops, custodians, and anyone who works with chemical products must attend a "Hazard Communication" training program. All new employees who work with chemicals should have the training as soon as possible.
• The OSHA Laboratory Standard requires that all laboratory employees who may be exposed to chemicals receive training. All new laboratory workers, as well as anyone who has not yet attended, should register for the "Laboratory Safety" program.
• Laboratory workers who plan to use radioactive materials are required to attend a Radiation Safety course "Radiation Safety for Radioactive Materials Users".
• Employees who may be exposed to human blood or other potentially infectious materials are required by the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to receive training on this standard.
• Employees who may be exposed to specific hazards, including lead, asbestos, formaldehyde, high noise levels, or who may work in confined spaces, or who conduct maintenance or servicing on machinery, or who are expected to use portable fire extinguishers are also required to attend specific training courses.
  

Many of these courses are presented at the EH&S Training Room at 118 Humphreys Service Building. The Humphreys Service Building is a brick building located near the intersection of Hoy Road (which goes by the Frank Rhodes Theory Center and the Parking Garage) and Route 366, near the Central Heating Plant. The "East Ithaca" campus bus has a stop nearby, and there is limited "Visitor" parking in the parking lot.  Some courses can also be scheduled at your on-campus location for your convenience.

 

New Employee Training
Hazard Communication 

For: General service workers (e.g., trades people, custodians, kitchen workers, shop workers, greenhouse workers) who may be exposed to chemical products

Provides compliance training for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200. The Hazard Communication standard mandates that all employees who use chemicals as part of their work responsibilities receive training. This course covers:

• safe handling of chemical products
• material safety data sheets
• product labels
• personal protective equipment
• potential hazards associated with chemical usage including recognizing signs and symptoms of overexposure and proper responses to spills, leaks, or other exposures

Laboratory Safety  

For: Laboratory workers who may be exposed to chemicals

Provides compliance training for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 and 29 CFR 1910.1450. The OSHA Laboratory Standard and the Hazard Communication Standard mandate that all laboratory workers who may be exposed to chemicals receive training. This program includes the following:

• the OSHA Laboratory Standard and Chemical Hygiene Plan
• toxicology
• material safety data sheets
• video on laboratory safety
• potential hazards associated with chemical usage including recognizing signs and symptoms of overexposure and proper responses to spills, leaks, or other exposures
  

Safety for Administrative and Office Professionals  

For: Office workers
Date: Bi-monthly, usually first Tuesday ( Check in CU Learn or take online)
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon

While office and administrative/clerical positions are not considered hazardous - stresses and other quality of work issues can create safety issues in the work environment. Cornell's Department of Environmental Health and Safety has created a training and informational session that addresses these safety issues.
General office safety, chemicals in the workplace, emergency preparedness and ergonomics are just some of the topics covered. In class discussion also provides opportunity for first aid, lighting/eye hazards and safe operation of office equipment topics to be addressed.

 

Laboratory Safety Courses
Bloodborne Pathogens 

For: Employees who may be exposed to human blood or other potentially infectious materials

Provides compliance training for OSHA 29 CFR 1910. 1030. It covers:

• an explanation of the standard
• epidemiology, symptoms, and modes of transmission of bloodborne pathogens
• explanation of the exposure control plan
• personal protective equipment
• the hepatitis B vaccine
• emergency procedures

Centrifuge Rotor Safety  

For: Laboratory workers using centrifuge rotors

This course describes a centrifuge accident, and discusses the basic safety practices that all centrifuge users should follow. Approximate duration of the class is one hour; sometimes EH&S will arrange for a vendor to conduct rotor inspections after the course.

Chemical Carcinogen Safety  

For: Laboratory workers, shop staff, and others using chemical carcinogens

Chemical safety training specific to carcinogenic chemicals (chemicals either postitively identified, or suspected to cause cancers in humans) including their safe storage, handling, and use. Contact EH&S if you want this course.

Chemical Storage and Segregation  

For: Laboratory workers using chemicals

Chemical storage areas in the academic laboratory setting include central stockrooms, storerooms, laboratory work areas, storage cabinets, refrigerators, and freezers.  There are established legal requirements as well as recommended practices for proper storage of chemicals.  This course will describe a chemical storage scheme based on the Department of Transportation (DOT) hazard classifications.

Cleaning Up Small Lab Spills  

For: Laboratory workers using chemicals

This training programs gives an overview of the materials required, the safety equipment that must be used, and the techniques to be followed to cleanup a small lab spill.

Compressed Gas Safety 

For: Laboratory workers using chemicals

Chemical safety training specific to compressed gases (covers potential asphixiation, toxicity, flammability and corrosive hazards). Contact EH&S if you want this course.

Corrosive Chemical Safety 

For: Laboratory workers who use corrosives

Corrosives are chemicals that cause visisble destruction or irreversible alterations in living tissue by chemical action. Common corrosives are acids and bases but there are other such as phenol. This course will cover how to safely handle and work with corrosives.

Cryogenic Safety

Chemical safety training specific to cryogenic liquids & solids (supercooled gases, that pose asphixiation, freezing and potential explosion hazards). Contact EH&S if you want this course.

DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping-Awareness  

For: Employees who handle or transport packages containing hazardous materials as part of their work for Cornell

This training program is for employees who handle or transport packages containing hazardous materials as part of their work for Cornell (e.g., packers and warehouse workers). This program only meets the general awareness requirements of the regulations. Individual employees may neet to attend one of the more extensive DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping courses if they provide packages of hazardous materials for transport off of Cornell's campus. The approximate duration of this course is one hour.

DOT Hazardous Materials Shipping - IATA 

For: Laboratory workers using chemicals

IATA (International Air Transport Authority) dangerous goods shipping training - required for shipping any hazardous material by airplane. The course is for the initial or biannual refresher course put on by an external firm. Contact EH&S if you think you need this course. This course ususally takes one or two full days.

EPA-Chemical Waste Disposal  

For: Laboratory workers using chemicals
Date: Monthly, after Chemical Safety for Lab Workers - Graduate Students

This training program is intended for chemical users on campus, and not for people who collect or transport chemical waste. The course covers the regulatory requirements for several types of chemical wastes and includes practical examples. The approximate time for the course is one hour including time for questions.

Fume Hood Use and Energy Conservation  

For: Laboratory workers who use fume hoods

Fume hoods are ventilated enclosure where harmful or toxic fumes and vapors can be safely handled while protecting the laboratory worker. They also use large amounts of energy to operate. This course will provide information on how to effectively use a fume hood and conserve energy at the same time.

How to Read Material Safety Data Sheets   

For: Laboratory workers who use chemicals

The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is the most important source of safety information in your laboratory. This course provides an in depth discussion on MSDSs and how to understand them. 

How to Write a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)  

For: Lab workers who use chemicals

The Laboratory Standard requires the creation of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the use of many chemicals, including particularly hazardous chemicals (such as carcinogens or highly toxic gases) or processes using particularly hazardous chemicals. This course focuses on how to write an SOP using the format described in the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Examples will be given.

Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) Awareness  

For: Laboratory workers who use Hydrofluoric acid

Hydrofluoric acid is one of the most hazardous chemicals used on campus. It is both a corrosive acid and a systemic poison. Cornell has a specific standard operating procedure for working with Hydrofluoric acid - this training program is required for any qorking with Hydrofluoric acid.

Laboratory Inspections 

For: All Laboratory workers, DSRs, and safety committee members

This 2-hour training presentation is designed to assist DSRs, safety committee members, faculty, staff, and graduate assistants conduct their own laboratory inspections by providing information on what issues to look for, what corrective actions to take, and identify best management practices to prevent future problems. The program covers inspection areas related to EPA, OSHA, Fire Safety, and NYS building code regulations. The program is also designed to assist laboratories prepare for the voluntary workplace consultations being offered through EH&S.

Laboratory Safety for Maintenance Workers   

For: Mechanical and service workers and their supervisors

This course describes the chemical, physical, and biological hazards encountered in laboratories at Cornell. It is designed to inform non-lab workers, such as Technical Shops staff, Building Care staff, and delivery persons, of the common hazards encountered in research and teaching labs so that they may perform their jobs in a safe manner. The format is a slide presentation supplemented with handouts.

Laser Safety 

For: Students and employees who use laser devices and systems to conduct laboratory educational or research activities.

The purpose of this training is to help protect students and employees from the potential hazards associated with laser devices and systems used to conduct laboratory educational or research activities. To achieve this goal, laser users should refer to the American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers, ANSI Z136.1-2000. 

ANSI Z136.1-2000 requires that all class 3b and 4 laser users attend laser safety training. This training includes topics such as laser hazards, laser classifications, signage/labeling, medical monitoring, safety guidelines, and what to do in case of an exposure incident. The format is a slide presentation, supplemented with handouts and short video segments.

Security of Hazardous Materials Used in Research  

For: DSRs, safety committee members, faculty, staff, and graduate assistants

The information provided in this program will enable you to better understand the importance of and need for reviewing the security status of your laboratory and other research areas.  The program is one and a half hours long. 

Testing Eyewashes and Safety Showers

This class is designed for the designated person(s) responsible for the testing of eyewashes and safety showers for a department or facility. It includes:

• review of OSHA requirements and related standards
• hands-on training

Radiation Safety Courses

Radiation Safety for Radioactive Materials Users 

For: Any laboratory worker who proposes to use radioactive materials at Cornell

Provides the basics for an individual to become qualified and, then, authorized to use radioactive materials. The objectives are to minimize dose, control contamination, respond to spills and emergencies, and comply with the university's legal obligations. Covers a discussion of:

• ways to minimize exposure
• compliance with requirements

Safety and Compliance for Moisture/Density Probe Users  

For: Researchers/workers using moisture/density probes

Provides the basis for an individual to become qualified and, then, authorized to use nuclear gauges. It covers:

• discussion of potential hazards

Advanced Record Keeping for Radioactive Material Inventory  

For: Laboratory workers assigned to keep inventory records for radioactive materials

Provides an overview of importance and requirements and discusses receipts, decay calculations, waste records, monthly reporting to EH&S, and the associated forms. Methods options, examples, and record keepers own inventory records are reviewed.

Advanced Radiation Safety Laboratory Survey  

For: Lab workers who are assigned to perform monthly radiation safety surveys

Provides a discussion for performing the required laboratory surveys and the keeping of the associated records. Includes demonstrations and examples.

Asbestos Awareness

Chainsaw Safety  

For: Workers who use chainsaws.

1/2 program includes classroom and outdoor sessions. Classroom session includes safety concerns, saw chain function & maintenance; cause, effect and prevention of kickback, an protective equipment. Outdoor session is a demonstration of modern felling, limbing and bucking techniques.

Cold Stress 

For: Workers exposed to cold temperatures.

As the weather becomes "frightful" during winter months, workers who must brave the outdoor conditions face the occupational hazard of exposure to the cold. Prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures can result in health problems as serious as trench foot, frostbite, and hypothermia.

Workers in such industries as construction, property maintenance, and agriculture need to be especially mindful of the weather.

Those attending this program will learn how cold temperatures affects the body, proper prevention techniques, and the treatment of cold-related disorders.

Confined Space Entry Training

Cranes, Hoists and Rigging

For: Workers who utilize cranes, hoists or rigging

Overhead cranes are used in many industries and construction to move heavy and oversized objects that other material handling methods cannot. Many varities of overhead cranes exist, as well as numerous types of rigging equipment. OSHA regulates overhead cranes through 29 CFR 1910.179. This training program will cover general requirements, design, inspection, and operation of cranes, as well as rigging requirements.

Department Annual Accident Review

Accidents that occur at Cornell University have direct and indirect effects on each department including monetary set backs, lost time, lost productivity, and decreased employee moral. EH&S staff can meet with supervisors and staff to review and discuss your department’s accident records. From this information we can then work together to establish accident and injury trends and target methods for decreasing your accidents.

Electrical Safety

For: Workers who work around electrical equipment.

In accordance with OSHA Rule 29 CFR 1910, specific training covered general safety principles, hazard identification/types of hazards, dangers of working under the influence of drugs/alcohol, overview of lockout/tagout, shock/arc/blast, effects of electrical current on the body, personal items vs electrical risk, extension cords/ground fault procedures, test equipment, the removal/installation of fuses, and eye protection.

Ethylene Oxide Awareness

For: Workers who work around ethylene oxide.

Based on human health and safety data exposure to EtO represents a heath hazard. OSHA the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has established a health and safety standard (29 CFR 1910.1047) to protect worker health. Cornell Universities Department of Environmental Health and Safety has created an information and training program to address the requirements of the standard. University workers that work in and around sterilizers than utilize EtO as the disinfecting agent need to attend this training session prior to working in and around that environment. EHS provides all the components to assist Cornell departments in protecting their workers.

Excavations and Trenching 

For: Workers who work around trenches and excavations.

Cornell employees who perform work in or around trenches and excavations are required to follow specific guidelines and standards put forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

This program provides training for employees regarding 29 CFR 1926.650-652. It covers specific excavation requirements including but not limited to soil classification, sloping and benching, protective systems, competent persons and inspections.

Fall Protection 

For: Employees who work on elevated surfaces or scaffolding.

Cornell employees who work on elevated surfaces or scaffolding are required by law to utilize a method of fall protectionn. Fall protection may include railings, barrier markings, or personal fall arrest systems. Employees who use personal fall arrest systems such as body harnesses, lanyards, and hoists should be trained in the proper usage of this equipment.

Forklift Operator Safety  

For: All operators of powered industrial trucks.

This is an OSHA mandated training required for all operators of powered industrial trucks. Powered industrial trucks include all forklifts, order-pickers, and motorized pallet jacks. This course requires classroom instruction as well as hands on driver evaluations.

Forklift Operator Safety - Refresher 

For: All operators of powered industrial trucks.

This program is for individuals who have previously completed the initial Forklift Operator Safety program. To maintain compliance with the OSHA 1910.178 standard, every forklift operator needs to attend this refresher course every 3 years, or immediately following any accident involving a forklift. The program will re-evaluate the operators driving skills while refreshing their memory relating to forklift terminology, designated locations for use, inspecting, and safe operation of powered industrial trucks.

Formaldehyde Awareness 

For: Employees who use formaldehyde are required to attend annually

This program provides compliance training for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1048. The Formaldehyde Standard requires training for employees who have a potential exposure to formaldehyde (but does not apply to lab scale operations). This training covers:

• the requirements of the standard
• the health effects of exposure
• personal protective equipment

Hearing Conservation  

For: Required for any employee who is exposed to high noise levels that exceed 85 decibels over an eight hour day. Contact Dustin O'Hara to schedule a noise assessment survey.

This program provides compliance training for OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 for general industry employees. It covers:

• the Hearing Conservation Program
• engineering controls
• correct use of hearing protectors
• participation in the Hearing Conservation Program

Heat Stress  

For: Cornell employees who may be required to work in hot environments

Training provided for Cornell employees who may be required to work in hot environments. Course covers the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, as well as first-aid procedures for the treatment of heat stress related conditions.

Hot Work, Welding & Cutting Safety  

For: Employees involved in welding, cutting, heating and hot work.

This program provides compliance training for OSHA 1926 Subpart J and Subpart Q Welding, cutting and heating (hot work). It covers the use of a hot work permit and provides helpful tips on how to protect the work place from fires.

Ladder Safety, Walking and Working Surfaces

One of the leading causes of workplace injuries is attributed to slips, trips and falls. This program primarily focuses on ladder safety, covering different types of ladders, their proper use and inspections. The attendee will also obtain knowledge covering the general requirements of walking and working surfaces (stairs, guardrails and other tripping hazards).

Lead Awareness  

For: Required for employees (maintenance, trades people) who may be exposed to lead (painters, welders, carpenters, etc.) and their supervisors

Lock-out/Tag-out

Machine Safeguarding 

For: Machine operators and shop supervisors

Machine safety starts with proper machinery safeguards. Numerous OSHA and ANSI regulations target machine guarding – are you protected at your workplace? This presentation will help inform machine operators and shop supervisors of some of the basic machine guarding requirements, while focusing on woodworking machines specifically.

Material Handling and Back Safety 

For: Employees who lift heavy objects in the course of their workday.

This training is targeted towards individuals whose jobs require them to frequently lift and move materials such as boxes, bags, crates, etc. Instructs trainees in ergonomics and safe lifting mechanics, geared particularly towards back safety. Also covers different material handling devices used to facilitate these jobs.

Mercury Awareness 

For: Pipe Shop staff.

This training prepares Pipe Shop staff and others working in facilities to deal with mercury in plumbing and related facilities issues.

OSHA 10 Hour Construction Outreach Training Program  

For: All construction workers.

This 10 hour program is intended to provide instruction on a variety of construction industry safety and health standards. The course will cover five required topic areas in addition to any other OSHA standard that applies to the construction industry which relates to the audience. Upon completion and having satisfactorily completed all 10 hours of training, the individual will receive an OSHA 10-hour construction safety completion card.

This 10 hour program is intended to provide instruction on a variety of general industry safety and health standards. The course will cover five required topic areas in addition to any other OSHA standard that applies to general industry which relates to the audience. Upon completion and having satisfactorily completed all 10 hours of training, the individual will receive an OSHA 10-hour general industry safety completion card.
