Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the equipment necessary for you to protect yourself while performing your job. It includes respirators, eyewear, gloves, clothing, hearing protection, and steel toe shoes.

Who should wear PPE?

  Laboratory workers
  Maintenance workers
  Construction workers
  Custodians
  Pesticide applicators
  Painters
  Firefighters
  Many others who may be exposed to chemical, physical or biological agents on the job

TYPES OF PPE

  Head Protection

  safety goggles, safety glasses, face shields
  Hearing Protection
  ear muffs, ear plugs
  Hand Protection
  gloves can offer protection from a variety of hazards.
Select and fit the glove to the hazard!
  Clothing
  Tyvek®, chemical aprons, cotton coveralls, and many more. Make sure you have the right clothes for the job!
  Respiratory Protection
  half-face, full-face, powered air purifying, air-line, SCBA. Respirator use requires annual fit testing and training. This service is offered by EH&S. Call 255-8200 for more information.

  Use the appropriate PPE for the job. Inspect the equipment before each use to ensure it is in good condition.

The OSHA Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standard, requires that employees who wear PPE receive training on the following topics:

  when PPE is necessary
  what PPE is necessary
  how to properly wear PPE
  the limitations of the PPE
  proper care, maintenance, useful life and disposal of the PPE

 

Environmental Health and Safety has developed a PPE training program and provides consultative services to departments in order to meet the requirements stated above.
