WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO...

The Cornell University Industrial Hygiene Program is administered by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety.

In offices, classrooms, farms, laboratories, construction sites, and even manholes, EH&S monitors human exposure to potential environmental hazards posed by dust, chemicals (like paint, insecticides, lab chemicals), carbon monoxide, excessive noise or heat, and poor air quality. If a problem is detected, the Industrial Hygiene section works with the affected units to resolve it. In addition, the Industrial Hygiene section:

  • works with contractors and university construction personnel to ensure that activities such as demolition, welding, and painting do not harm those working nearby

  • issues protective gear such as respirators, hearing protectors, gloves, and protective clothing, and provides user training

  • responds to hazardous materials emergencies, determining when an affected environment is again habitable

  • conducts training in chemical safety, OSHA compliance, and other areas, to minimize hazardous exposures and protect employee health
