During any given four-month period, Cornell University may have as many as one hundred different trenches and open excavations through out the campus. Excavations are of particular concern at EH&S due to the severity of the hazards associated with excavations and the University’s complex underground utility infrastructure.
Cornell employees working in or around excavations need to be informed of their safety requirements. OSHA places very strict regulations governing the design of an excavation, cave-in prevention methods, and employee training. Cornell’s Department of EH&S has developed a very thorough training program for excavation workers, addressing topics from design considerations to inspections to protective equipment in an effort to eliminate excavation incidents on Cornell project sites. Please contact EH&S for additional information.
