Administrative Section

The Director of EH&S has overall responsibility for EH&S’s program and services, budget, operations, and specific safety policies.
- Provide leadership, and strategic and innovative expertise for the campus environmental health and safety program.
- Coordinate and establish the parameters by which EH&S Managers and their teams provide services to, and develops programs for Cornell’s main campus, Geneva Experiment Station, and several other off-site facilities.
- The Director’s office and his management team has responsibility for campus compliance oversight, regulatory liaison, and for academic/administrative coordination, performance measures and CEO metrics, department operations budget, strategic planning, hazardous materials emergency preparedness and response, and student internship programs.
- Interact with Cornell administrators, safety representatives, staff, students, and local community leaders to address matters of environmental health and safety. The Director also interacts with, and serves as a liaison on a national level with key regulatory program administrators, legislators, and environmental health and safety-focused professional associations.
- Coordinate issue-driven groups composed of campus faculty and staff, EH&S staff, Department Safety Representatives, University Assemblies Representatives, and student leaders, to address cross-disciplinary and broad functional issues.
- Work with Cornell’s senior Management staff to advocate for environmental health and safety on campus, promote EH&S programs and services in support of the University’s mission, and participates in collaborative efforts among Campus and Business Services, and other major units on Campus.
- Serve as back-up Biological Safety Officer for Cornell University, serve as a key back-up Emergency Operations Center Director, and is involved in major campus emergencies and related EOC response coordination.

- Supervisor to the Emergency Services Team (2418’s). Assure schedule coverage 24 hrs / day, 7 days / week, 365 days / year. Schedule day-to-day tasks and responsibilities within the group, provide normal university required supervisory functions.
- Campus coordinator of the PAD: Public Access Defibrillation program. Work with various groups to coordinate their involvement in the campus wide program. Assure that the campus program falls within the NYS DOH requirements. Provide CPR AED training as needed for the program.
- Emergency response to a wide variety of campus emergencies
(fires, fire alarms, EMS calls, chemical, biological, and radiation, accidents) - During the above emergencies, act as the University liaison with other responding agencies.

Laboratory and Radiation Safety Section

Head of the Laboratory Safety Section:
- Work with the section staff to maintain and improve programs and services for radiation protection, management and disposal of hazardous chemical waste, and protection of laboratory workers from chemical and physical hazards.
- Supervise the two professionals who manage the Hazardous Materials Group and the Laboratory Safety Group.
Radiation Safety Officer:
- Ensure that Cornell has a system of policies, procedures, services, trainings, inspections and system self evaluations that provide a safe working environment, assure compliance with US NRC and NY DOH regulations and meet the needs of research and teaching programs on the campus.
- Supervise 3 radiation safety professionals.
Program Manager for both radiation safety training and emergency response to Incidents involving radioactive materials:
- Expected to 1) identify the specific things that are needed for these programs to meet the goals of safety, compliance and customer service, 2) develop and carry out these things (lab worker training classes, drills on clean-up of radioactive material, etc.), and 3) measure the performance of these programs and work to continuously improve them.
Radiation Safety
