OPERATIONS

The Director of EH&S has overall responsibility for EH&S’s program and services, budget, operations, fire and emergency response and specific safety policies.
- Provide leadership, and strategic and innovative expertise for the campus environmental health and safety program.
- Coordinate and establish the parameters by which EH&S Managers and their teams provide services to, and develops programs for Cornell’s main campus, Geneva Experiment Station, and several other off-site facilities.
- The Director’s office and her management team has responsibility for campus compliance oversight, regulatory liaison, and for academic/administrative coordination, performance measures and CEO metrics, department operations budget, strategic planning, hazardous materials emergency preparedness and response, and student internship programs.
- Interact with Cornell administrators, safety representatives, staff, students, and local community leaders to address matters of environmental health and safety. The Director also interacts with, and serves as a liaison on a national level with key regulatory program administrators, legislators, and environmental health and safety-focused professional associations.
- Coordinate issue-driven groups composed of campus faculty and staff, EH&S staff, Department Safety Representatives, University Assemblies Representatives, and student leaders, to address cross-disciplinary and broad functional issues.
- Work with Cornell’s senior Management staff to advocate for environmental health and safety on campus, promote EH&S programs and services in support of the University’s mission, and participates in collaborative efforts among Campus and Business Services, and other major units on Campus.
- Serve as a key back-up Emergency Operations Center Director, and is involved in major campus emergencies and related EOC response coordination.

Responsible for overall management of EH&S programs and services at New York State Agricultural Experiment Stations in collaboration with Ithaca EH&S Units.- Interact with NYSAES administrators, safety representatives, staff, students, and local community leaders to address matters of environmental health and safety
- Work with NYSAES’ Senior Management staff to advocate for EH&S on Fredonia, Geneva, Hudson Valley Stations, promote EH&S programs and service in support of the NYSAES and University’s mission, and participates in collaborative efforts among Station and Unit Services

Event Management

- Review and approve Use of University Property forms for proposed campus events. Coordinate EH&S safety reviews of events and event setups.
- Schedule EH&S staffing for public assemblies and campus events. Coordinate emergency medical staffing and other emergency services planning and staffing for public assemblies and campus events.
CUEMS Supervisor
- Provide supervision and guidance to CUEMS officers and members
- Support CUEMS organizational goals and objectives through management of CUEMS interactions with EH&S and University operations, policies, and proceudres
Fire & Emergency Services

Supervisor of Emergency Services Team (2418)
- Supervisor to the Emergency Services Team (2418’s). Assure schedule coverage 24 hrs / day, 7 days / week, 365 days / year. Schedule day-to-day tasks and responsibilities within the group, provide normal university required supervisory functions.
- Campus coordinator of the PAD: Public Access Defibrillation program. Work with various groups to coordinate their involvement in the campus wide program. Assure that the campus program falls within the NYS DOH requirements. Provide CPR AED training as needed for the program.
- Emergency response to a wide variety of campus emergencies
(fires, fire alarms, EMS calls, chemical, biological, and radiation, accidents) - During the above emergencies, act as the University liaison with other responding agencies.
- Respond to various requests for service: smoke detector activations, odor complaints, safety concerns, Fire alarm “trouble conditions,” and other minor incidents
- Coordinate and conduct evacuation drills as required by NYS in all Cornell Owned buildings

- Performs DOT shipments of hazardous materials
- Participate in EH&S’s emergency response program for HAZMAT spills

- Interpretation and implementation of OSHA regulations relevant to laboratories, including maintaining the Chemical Hygiene Plan
- Provide training on chemical and laboratory safety, laboratory spill response, the development of standard operating procedures and related topics for the campus
- Provide information resources for chemical and laboratory safety for the campus
- Manage the fume hood, safety shower, and eyewash testing and inspection programs
- Participate in the life cycle review of new and renovated laboratory facilities (program development, design, construction, commissioning, on-going testing, decommissioning)
- Facilitate the organization and operation of departmental safety committees

- Collect and segregate hazardous chemical waste
- Participate as a trainer in EH&S training programs for Chemical Waste Disposal
- Coordinate shipments of hazardous chemical waste, including oversight of the waste packing, loading and approval of the vehicle, review of the paperwork, and signing the manifest and land disposal restriction for Cornell University
- Maintain all required EPA, DOT, and DEC operating permits and paperwork records
- Compile all required EPA, and DEC reports including quarterly and annual chemical waste reports
- Participate in EH&S’s emergency response program as an operations coordinator, entry team member, and/or information resource for chemical spills

- Conduct comprehensive inspections of research areas on campus
- Manage the Hazard Communication for research areas program
- As assigned, other major projects such as mercury or silver reclamation, or fume hood evaluations.
- Lead for EH&S in Environmental Compliance Assessment Program
- Represent EH&S at the new employee Cornell Resource Fair
- Assist with EH&S participation in Ezranet and Energy Initiative projects
- Assist with respirator fit testing
- Member of the EH&S emergency response team
- General Accounting and Administrative duties including APPS, AP vouchers, procurement card transactions, and travel arrangements
- Assist with radiation safety permit amendments
- Keep an updated database for all isotope monthly monitoring report records received from labs of isotopes on campus
- Keep database of new users for radioisotopes up to date as they complete the class
- Handle all billing for radioactive waste handled by Rad staff; monitoring badges distributed to Rad labs, and meters calibrated for radioisotope labs
- Update and maintain Safetybase - the EH&S safety training database - and training records for the Research and Radiation Safety Section
- Assist in ordering supplies for office, provide back-up front desk coverage as needed and assist OHS staff if needed
- Coordinate office functions
